As vaping gains in popularity, many smokers want to try to switch, but may be intimidated by the vape shop experience. Maybe it's the fear of going into a shop with many vapers who are obviously advanced, carrying huge mods, building coils, and blowing huge clouds. The store employees are sincere and helpful, but after many years maybe they have forgotten what it was like when they first started.

As a store that caters to new vapers, we try to guide them in a basic way and help them to get a vape experience satisfying enough so they won't want to go back to cigarettes. Most new vapers do not want to start with a high wattage box mod or high-maintenance device, and prefer a smaller unit. Here are some pointers for picking out the right equipment and juice, and what to expect when starting to vape:

Equipment: As a beginning vaper, you need to know that vape equipment does not have to be complicated or expensive. Our recommendation is to start with the smaller, simpler units. If you buy a powerful mod to begin with, the vape output may be too intense, causing excessive coughing. We recommend starting out with a lower watt unit that has a resistance of 1 to 1.8 ohm. This will enable you to gradually get used to the inhale. Granted most vapers move on to higher powered devices, but the lower wattage devices are best for most beginners.

e-Juice: If you are trying to replace a nicotine amount from a pack a day cigarette habit, it is recommended to start out a little high in the nicotine level. For this type of person, we suggest they start at a 12mg if they are using a lower powered vape device. This way than can vape less and use less juice. If by chance they find the juice TOO strong on nicotine, they can buy a lower nicotine level of the same flavor and dilute it. For example, if a 12 nicotine was too strong, they can go back and buy a 0 and dilute it to the lower level they want to try:

  • 1 part 12mg +1 part 6mg = 9mg
  • 1 part 12mg + 1 part 3mg = 7.5mg
  • 1 part 12mg + 1 part 0mg = 6mg
  • 1 part 12mg + 2 parts 0mg = 4mg

Other things to consider: Keep in mind that you will want to buy a device that has inexpensive, replaceable coils. Coils burn out on every ecig device. You'll notice that your juice will start tasting bad or burnt. How often they burn out depends on several factors such as how often you use it, and the e-liquid mix you are using. If the juice is high VG or contains a lot of sugar, expect your coils to burn out quicker. Be sure the device you buy has readily available replacement coils when you need them.

There are reasons that most vapers who have successfully switched from smoking move up to the higher powered sub -ohm vape devices. These devices produce more vapor, allowing users to have a deeper lung hit. Also the nicotine level can be reduced, resulting in better tasting juice. You will know when and if you are ready to move up to a more powerful device.

Whenever your vape journey begins and wherever it takes you, feel free to call the shop during business hours and talk to a member of our staff. They will be happy to help you. Also check out our recommended starter device, the FreeAir Vape Starter Kit here in our online store
